"Why not give me the (title) shot. (WFC) told me that if I got past Nick Christy he'd give me the shot. Why not?,"Gaines told J. Waugh (SR). "I have 29 fights now, I had three belts. Give me my shot!"

GAINES (L) JUST MISSING CHRISTY.
The West Coast Fighting event, that took place September 8 in Yuba City, brought us a fan friendly welterweight co-main event. After the card began with Granson Clark and Micah Herbert pulling out first round TKO victories with powerful performances, Nick Christy stepped up in weight to take on the "Infamous" Marcus Gaines.
"Everything to me was off as far as my stand up," Gaines told J. Waugh (www.srmma.com). "He knocked me to the ground and threw too many punches at me that landed that weren't suppose to land. So, to me, my game as far as boxing was off."
CHRISTY (L) DROPPING GAINES.
Gaines felt this way because the naturally smaller Christy was able to get to the punch a little bit quicker than Gaines in the early exchanges of the fight. After Gaines stuffed the take down twice in the round, Christy dropped him with a thundering right hand. He hit Gaines so hard that he momentarily began walking away as if the referee had already stopped the fight. Christy threw furious hands in attempting to end the fight, cutting Gaines right eyebrow wide open. This round was most assuredly Christy's, but the second stanza brought a trip take down that was the beginning of the end for Christy.
"(WFC) said I had Marcus Gaines three weeks out. I said okay," Christy told J. Waugh (www.srmma.com). "So I gained a lot of water weight, up to 180(lbs). Then I dropped all the water weight and tried to gain it back. So I think a lot of that water in three weeks, getting my weight up and then dropping it probably was a factor too."
CHRISTY (L) LANDING AN UPPERCUT.
Gaines moved from side control, obtained during the take down, into full mount. He kept this position for what felt like minutes as he landed elbows to the arms and face of Christy. The referee eventually stepped in to stop the fight (2:24, RD 2) as Christy was unable to get out of the position or keep Gaines from throwing strikes. Gaines was originally set to take on the now WFC welterweight champion Kito Andrews before the card was switched around due to injuries. Now that Andrews is the new champion, Gaines is ready to take him on for the title. Gaines expressed that he was already told he would get the next potential shot if he beat Christy, which he did in an inspiring come from behind manner, now winning four of his last five fights.
GAINES ON TOP.
"My ground game. I've been working on it so much, it took a toll (On Christy) this fight," Gaines told J. Waugh (www.srmma.com). "Why not give me the (title) shot. (WFC) told me that if I got past Nick Christy he'd give me the shot. Why not? . . . I have 29 fights now, I had three belts. Give me my shot!"
