AVILA (RED) LANDING A LEG KICK.
Anthony "The Shark" Avila extended his four year winning streak by defeating Sergio Quinones in the first round of his Tachi Palace (TPF) 14 fight on September 7. He used his striking game to set up the guillotine choke victory earned just over three minutes into the fight (3:03 exactly).
"I'm not trying to say I'm really good at stand up, but I think these guys are worried about my hands," Avila told J. Waugh (www.srmma.com). "And they take me down. I actually have a legit ground game, obviously."
Anthony Avila sinking in the choke.
Avila used his jab and uppercut as an effective combination while on the feet, before Quinones took him to the canvas. After a guillotine choke attempt by Avila, the two scrambled around the mat with Avila gaining full mount. He sunk in the choke for a second time and finished the bout. The win is his eighth consecutive victory and third consecutive submission win. Now Avila is calling for the UFC attention that Tachi Palace winners tend to garner.
"(UFC President) Dana White, I'm knocking," Avila told J. Waugh (www.srmma.com). "One day you're going to answer the door!"
DeAnda (R) vs Montgomery (L).
Avila's manager (Dave Hirschbein) also sponsors Angel DeAnda, who fought on the same card. He took on Drew "The Hammer" Montgomery (now 12-6) in a rematch, DeAnda won the first meeting by TKO (3:05, RD 1) back in 2009. This time around, the result took a little longer to come for DeAnda. He won the rematch by TKO (4:30) in the first round to end the winning streak of Montgomery.
"It feels good, especially here at the Tachi. I've been wanting to fight here for awhile," DeAnda told J. Waugh (www.srmma.com). "I got to keep doing what I'm doing, keep winning."
DeAnda charged forward throwing punches, this is when the two clinched up and Montgomery pulled guard. This was a move that even surprised DeAnda as the two went to the mat.
DEANDA LANDING SHOTS FROM TOP CONTROL.
"He jumped guard, that was a shock. I didn't want to let him submit me because I know he's pretty good off his back," DeAnda said.
DeAnda "The Dream" (now 10-2) was able to use his size to maintain top control in Montgomery's guard. Effective, and vicious, ground and pound was the winning method for DeAnda as he unleashed punches from above to end the bout. Montgomery had a five fight winning streak snapped by "The Dream" as he moved his own winning streak to three consecutive.
DEANDA (L) GETTING HIS HAND RAISED IN VICTORY.
"So far it seems like Tachi's been the place to be right before you go to the big show" DeAnda told J. Waugh (www.srmma.com). "So hopefully they bring me back so I can keep doing what I do, getting wins, and training hard."
