"I've been doing this a long time, pretty much a veteran of this sport," Poppies Martinez told Matthew (SR) post-fight. "I've been fighting for a long time.  My goal is to get into the UFC as soon as possible."

       Poppies "The Tachi Kid" Martinez faced off against Jason Drake (now 4-6) at Tachi Palace Fights 14 'Validation', on September 7 in Lemoore (CA). It only took Martinez one round to increase his record to a respectable 21-8-1. After some cautious exchanges on the feet, Martinez took Drake down into guard.  Though Drake held Martinez's posture well and threatened with a rubber guard, Martinez threw a few good punches from the top before backing out back to his feet.
"I was looking at him to see how he was moving. He kept on leaving his legs out, and I got real good leg locks," Martinez told Matthew (www.srmma.com) post-fight, "I wasn't worried about if he went for my leg.  I'm really good at leg locks, good defense against the leg locks."

       Standing over Drake and avoiding the up kick, Martinez found an opening to dive into guard with a punch. Quickly transitioning to a heel hook and after a few seconds of struggling, Drake tapped out. The fight ended at 1:48 of round one. Martinez entered the cage representing Team Thrive MMA and his ancestry, the Tachi Yokut Tribe. He credits his strength to support from his family, tribe, and fight team.
"I got a lot of motivation to be where I'm at. I got a lot of support from my tribe, and a lot of people outside of the tribe. When I retire, I want to make my tribe really proud of me . . ." Martinez told Matthew (www.srmma.com) post-fight, "I'm the first champion from my tribe, and I hope I ain't the last."
