"Machida earned the contender spot with his showcase knockout of Ryan Bader earlier this month," UFC stated. "But this time it was Machida who declined the opportunity, opening the door for fellow Brazilian Belfort to earn the nod."
(CONTINUED). . .
After Jones turned down a fight with Chael Sonnen, Lyoto Machida apparently declined the opportunity to fight Jon Jones for the light heavyweight title at UFC 152. UFC President Dana White announced that UFC middleweight fighter Vitor Belfort, who was scheduled to fight Alan Belcher at UFC 153, has accepted the title fight against Jones as the UFC 152 headliner on a card that also features Michael Bisping vs Brian Stann and Joseph Benavidez vs Demetrious Johnson for flyweight title.
“I don’t ever think about being ready,” Sonnen said. “All I need to know is when it’s my turn, and none of that other stuff matters to me. Sure, anybody can train for a fight and show up in shape, but a real man just steps in and lets it ride.”
Belfort hasn't competed at light heavyweight since 2007 and is now primed to become a UFC champion once again. UFC 152 takes place September 22nd on pay per view. Machida's management have announced that a statement regarding the reasons behind declining the fight will be published, stay tuned for more details.
