UPDATE: HARRISON WINS GOLD
USA Olympian Kayla Harrison beat world renowned judo practitioner, and world number one competitor, Mayra Aguiar who has won medals in the world championship's as well as the Pan-American championships. Ronda Rousey won bronze in 2008, but Harrison's arm bar victory put her in the finals of the women's judo competition. USA Coach Jimmy Pedro believed the winner of the bout is destined for more.
"The winner of this match is likely to win it all, and I like our odds," Pedro said.
The score remained 0-0 throughout most of the bout with Harrison earning a late point with a well timed trip, Aguiar looked to push the pace and get the point back in the last 20 seconds of the contest but Harrison was able to sink in the arm bar and pull out the victory. Harrison was guaranteed a silver medal, the best in women's USA judo history, and took on Gemma Gibbons (Great Britain) in the match up for gold. Harrison scored twice in the final match and kept Gibbons shut out on the board to take home the gold medal, a first in USA Olympic judo. The victory makes it only eight sports that the USA has not won Olympic gold as well as making Harrison, Ohio native, hands down the most decorated Olympic judo participant in USA history.
