SMITH (BLUE) GRAPPLING SUMNER (RED).
Eric Smith took on Joseph Sumner in a middleweight affair that lasted all three rounds with Smith winning the judges decision. Smith explained what he feels coming into a fight and what he visualizes fight night.
"You know that feeling you get when you go down a roller coaster? It's like that all day everyday leading up to the fight," Smith told J. Waugh (www.srmma.com). "But once you step into the ring, it all goes away and you get tunnel vision. All you see is your opponent."
SUMNER (RED), SMITH (BLUE).
Sumner spoke about allowing Smith to cut less weight for the fight, saying Smith was a bit over the weight limit but the fight still went on according to plan. Sumner was willing to engage with Smith coming into the fight and hoping to use his grappling to score so damaging shots.
"If he wants to stand and bang we're going to do so," Sumner told Matthew (www.srmma.com). "I plan on dictating the way the fights goes. Hopefully my ground and pound will slow him down a bit and inflict some damage."
ERIC SMITH POST FIGHT
Sumner looked for the early take down in round one but Smith used a headlock to get a trip take down that he eventually worked to getting back position. Although Smith landed many punches in between the grappling exchanges, Sumner was eventually able to get back to his feet. Round two saw more back and forth grappling as punches were flying and landing, Smith landed several powerful shots but Sumner landed his own and looked to take the fight to the mat. Sumner had top control in the third round but Smith eventually reversed the hold and ended the round with a full body triangle locked in, with punches to accompany the position. Smith eventually won the fight by unanimous decision. The fight had a strong case for fight of the night and fulfill on Smith's pre-fight thoughts.
"It's not going to be a boring fight," Smith told J. Waugh (www.srmma.com). "Whatever he's bringing to the table I'm ready for, I'm prepared to handle any situation."
CARRINO (B) SINKING IN THE CHOKE.
Cory Carrino finished Daniel Maupin by rear naked choke in round one of their featherweight fight that was on the same card. Maupin took Carrino to the mat but Carrino eventually escaped and earned a take down of his own. Carrino used the take down to eventually finish the night by submission, earning his first career victory.
"It feels awesome," Carrino told J. Waugh (www.srmma.com) before leaving to get stitches on his eye lid. "The minute I saw his back was towards me I just used the rear naked choke, got my hooks in and just hoped for a tap out. . . I just love the feeling the crowd gives me when I win my fight."
PUPO (BLUE), CHILDRESS (RED).
Jacob Pupo also earned his first CAMO victory by defeating his opponent John Childress with a triangle choke in round one the fight. Pupo was elated post fight and spoke of the effectiveness he feels with the ground game.
"It feels great man, A lot of hard work pays off. Know that man," Pupo told J. Waugh (www.srmma.com). "I know my jiu jitsu is good so when I'm in my guard it's over man. I'm tapping everyone out. I'm breaking arms or I'll put you to sleep."
PUPO SINKING IN THE FINISH FROM BOTTOM.
Pupo expressed his desire to fight in front of his home town crowd more often. Pupo expressed that he enjoyed fighting for Galaxy Fight Night but also pointed out other opportunities he is open to if the organization comes calling.
"NorCal Combat out of Gridley (CA), I'm interested there," Pupo told J. Waugh (www.srmma.com). "Because I'm a local boy out of here in Yuba City (CA). Anything local man, I don't want to travel, I want to stay in my backyard."
DUNCAN (B) SLAMMING PERILLO
Johnny Duncan earned his first CAMO victory as well as the Galaxy Fight Night lightweight title, beating Joshua Perillo in the co-main event of the evening. The fight went all three rounds with Duncan able to secure more take downs in the back and forth fight. Perillo was able to take Duncan to the canvas as well but Duncan earned the biggest slam of the evening on route to winning the decision. He expressed the excitement post fight to SRMMA.
"I feel great man, top of the world right now," Duncan told Matthew (www.srmma.com). "I'm a straight up stand up guy, I know enough on the ground to protect myself. . . I took this fight on nine days notice. . .This is what I love to do."
