CULBRETH AFTER GETTING HIT BELOW THE BELT
Dawgs of War 145 lbs champion Arlene Culbreth (2-1 overall) dropped down to 135lbs to fight Cynthia Calvillo (3-0 CAMO) at the World Combat Series 5 event that took place at the San Jose Fit Expo on July 15th. Culbreth said during the weigh ins at Studio 8 in San Jose that she found it moderately challenging to get to the new weight limit, but overcame any obstacles.
"I couldn't even tell you the last time I was 135 (lbs)," Culbreth told Johnny Waugh (www.srmma.com). "It was definitely a challenge. But I like a good challenge, so I rose to the occasion I guess you could say."

Culbreth came out aggressive and after weathering some strikes, she moved forward and pinned Calvillo to the cage. After the referee eventually separated the two, Calvillo landed a pin point combination and eventually Culbreth shot in for a single leg take down that Calvillo was able to thwart off. Culbreth's strength looked to have improved since her last bout at Dawg's of War, something she may have been eluding to as a point of improvement before the fight.
"I always have personal goals," Culbreth told Johnny Waugh (www.srmma.com). "Just improving with every fight. I couldn't tell you, then I'd have to kill you (She said jokingly). . . just getting better with each fight."
CALVILLO AFTER WINNING
The second round was evidence of her strength as Culbreth dropped Calvillo with a huge over hand right that dropped her to the canvas. Culbreth moved into a postured stance in Calvillo's guard and landed punches from the top position. Calvillo used a knee bar attempt to reverse the position into an eventual full mount of Culbreth. Calvillo landed punches until Culbreth moved to escape, leaving the opening needed for Calvillo to sink in the rear naked choke and finish the fight in the second round. Calvillo said she was thankful to have fought an opponent of equal high caliber amateur fight talent.
"I eventually want to turn pro," Calvillo told Johnny Waugh (www.srmma.com). "I have a title as well. . . the only way I'm going to get better is if I fight opponents that are just as tough as I am."
