(CONTINUED). . .SHOW & OPINION
THIS IS A UFC 148 OPINION PIECE FROM TY SILVA.
The most intriguing rematch in the history of MMA will take place this Saturday night, July 7, in Las Vegas as middleweight champion Anderson “The Spider” Silva puts his belt on the line against his nemesis Chael Sonnen. This epic rematch is full of controversy. After their first fight it was revealed that Silva fought with a broken rib while Chael tested positive for steroid use.
"The use of anabolic steroids and other banned substances are not tolerated by the commission," CSAC executive officer George Dodd said. "Anabolic agents put the health and safety of both the user and his opponents at risk."
Thus, many fans feel that the rematch is undeserved and that Sonnen talked his way into it. After all, if he couldn’t beat an injured Silva while he was 'juiced up', how is he going to do it now? So many people claim that Sonnen put a beating on the Champion in 2010, but did he really? The only fighter visibly damaged after their first fight was Sonnen, not Silva. In fact, Silva showed no wear for a fighter who had just received a beat down for five rounds.
SONNEN AFTER UFC 117 FIGHT WITH SILVA.
The fact is Sonnen sorely lacks the kind of power that inflicts damage during a fight. His power is exclusive to his wrestling and does not seem to carry over to his striking. His ground game can be suffocating, but his ground & pound is mediocre and he often resorts to weak hammer fists, ear slaps, and hitting with his shoulders. Silva on the other hand has the most career knockdowns in the sport. His strikes are not only razor sharp in precision, but he also hits extremely hard. Just ask the two light heavyweights (Forrest Griffin and James Irvin) he knocked out in devastating fashion. Silva can hit hard both standing and on the ground. You can see this by the way he finished Nate Marquardt, or more recently Yushi Okami. The champion’s ground & pound is not to be messed with including his ground game. A proficient BJJ black belt under the Nogueira brothers, Silva can submit durable opponents from anywhere at anytime similar to his fights against Dan Henderson and Sonnen the first time. Sonnen’s greatest asset on the other hand is his toughness. Even during his wins Chael has taken severe damage, like when he fought against Marquadt. In fact, Chael is banking on his toughness to steal the belt from the champion. He believes his will to win is greater than Silva’s.
". . .Ya know, I've fought 49 men. It's not as if I've never been to the orthodontist before," Sonnen said. "or my jaw reset or my scalp stapled shut in the ER. There's a couple things he didn't say he was gonna do, starting with beating me, starting with breaking my spirit and leaving with the victory, because he's not. . ."
Sonnen has to know his skills are not at the same level as Silva after making comments like “He is a martial artist. I am a cage fighter,” during the pre-fight press conference. This is funny coming from the man who would simply not engage a possibly drugged-out and unfit-to-fight Paulo Filho (22-4) in their rematch. The bottom line is Sonnen pissed off the wrong man and is biting off way more than he can chew. Silva looks extremely focused, motivated, and confident for this fight. He knows he is a much better fighter than Sonnen, and not for a second does he buy into Sonnen’s belief that his will to win is greater than the champion’s. Their first fight already told the tale of these two fighters. Sonnen is tough, but Silva is tougher. Silva took the best Sonnen had to offer and finished him. Their second fight will tell the last part of their story. Silva will make good on his promises to the delight of the Brazilian nation as well as MMA fans all over the world.
THE FINISH:
“The Spider” will look his best ever as he meticulously destroys Sonnen with vicious strikes in the very first round.

Great Piece Ty. The thing that most stands out to me as a point of contention though is that I believe Sonnen's ground and pound to be a lot more than mediocre. I feel like Munoz and Sonnen are the best in the UFC right now at dominating men on the canvas.

BUT IT REALLY HOPE TO SEE THE FINISH AS WELL SO IM ROOTING FOR THAT EITHER WAY!

Nice writing Ty! I have to agree somewhat with Johnny on Sonnen's ground and pound. The only way I see Silva winning is a knockout, which is very possible with his ferocious and stunningly accurate strikes. However, Sonnen is no pushover, you can't beat him up, he'll keep going. Silva's weakness is that he can't get off his back. Look at the first round of his fight with Dan Henderson, Henderson dominated him the whole round and Silva was saved by the bell...but Silva did go onto win by submission, so there's that. Silva doesn't want to be on the ground again with Sonnen, and Sonnen sure doesn't want to stay in Silva's reach. They both better bring it, I wanna see a good fight.
