HERNANDEZ (RED), NELSON (BLUE)
Anthony Hernandez took on Sean Nelson for the 185 lbs Stand Up Fighters title on June 22nd in Roseville, CA. Nelson was aware of the Ultimate Reno Combat champions talents coming into this fight.
"I know what he's capable of," Nelson told J. Waugh (www.srmma.com). "This is by far the biggest fight of my career."
The two exchanged shots early in round one. Hernandez seemed to have a theme of uppercuts established as he stunned Nelson early on. Dana Morrissey, one of Hernandez's trainers, discussed the plan to keep Nelson away.
HERNANDEZ GETTING HIS TITLE.
"We're just going to keep (Nelson) at the end of our punches," Morrissey told J. Waugh (www.srmma.com). "So he doesn't have the opportunity to come in and take Anthony down."
There was no time to take Anthony to the mat as he kept Nelson away with uppercuts that moved him backward. The referee stopped Hernandez from continuing the assault after Nelson caught some uppercuts and turn to move across the cage, turning his back to Hernandez. The referee deemed the fight over by TKO in the first round.
"It feels great," Hernandez told J. Waugh (www.srmma.com). "I've been putting in all the hard work. I'm proud it's just paying off."
CULBRETH GETTING HER TITLE.
Arlene Culbreth took on Kelly Faszholz for the vacant Dawgs of War female title at 145 lbs. Faszholz seemed to have won the first round with her straight striking technique. Culbreth was the shorter fighter and looked to have a bit of trouble early on with the somewhat lanky nature of her opponent. This was something Culbreth was able to overcome in the second round. Faszholz hurt Culbreth with a combination that had her moving backward.
As she came in to land more blows Culbreth knocked Faszholz down with a spinning back hand and pounded out the victory with strikes from top position. Culbreth used her determination to fight through the bout and win the title according to her post fight interview.
"What I have on my side is definitely a lot of strength and heart," Culbreth told J. Waugh (www.srmma.com). "I didn't give up. . . I just fought through it and came out."
DUNCAN (RED) sinking in the armbar.
Armando Duncan was able to pull out an arm bar victory at the 1:27 mark of the second round after withstanding the first round assault by Jacob Douangdara. Duncan was in a kimura attempt by Douangdara as he had Duncan fully mounted before he was able to escape. In the second round, Duncan pulled out the victory after his opponent took him down but left enough of an opportunity for Duncan to sink in the arm bar, he is hopeful for the future.
"I wanted to take him down and (use my) ground and pound, and everything played out well," Duncan told J. Waugh (www.srmma.com). "Hopefully I get more fights and an amateur title shot."
Blake Schaffer (Auburn Martial Arts) took on Johnny Duncan (Huckaba's MMA) at 165 lbs. Schaffer was able to get the early take down and during a scramble he was able to sink in a tight guillotine choke. Schaffer had many compliments about his opponent and the gym he trains.
SCHAFFER (BLUE) sinking in the choke.
"It feels great. I got nothing but respect for Huckaba and their gym," Schaffer told J. Waugh (www.srmma.com). "I got his neck some how. I tried to switch my legs to cinch in the guillotine. . . eventually finished the fight."
