The West Coast Fighting Championship welterweight title will be on the line this summer at the WCFC "Showdown" event on June 9. Welterweight champion Max "Pain" Griffin (4-0) will be making the first defense of his title against a late replacement to the card, Justin Baesman (9-2). Both fighters spoke to SR about their upcoming title fight and how they see one another's skill sets matching up. Griffin, of Team Marinoble's as well as training with Dana Morrissey, doesn't believe that the recent change of opponent is much more of a threat than his original opponent Kenny Ento.
"We train for the particular fighter," Griffin said to SR. "But a month out is enough time to prepare for a new fighter coming to take my belt."
Justin "The Raw Deal" Baesman is on a multi fight winning streak coming into this match up and has kept his training on a level that he believes will be more than the champion can handle.
"I fought six times last year and I plan on matching that this year," Baesman told SR. "(Teams) Fight Core and Combat Fitness have helped me stay on it, I rarely take any days off anymore."
Griffin and Baesman have both fought Jaime Jara, Griffin most recently knocked out Jara in the first minute of their fight to win his WCFC title, while Baesman won a decision over Jara last month. Baesman felt that Jara at times may be a bit of a slow starter inside the cage and that Griffin "blazed him" early to take the win. The champion on the other hand was not all too impressed with Baesman's effort against Jara.
"Fighting Jara was huge for me because he's known as such a beast," Griffin told SR. "I have knock out power and it showed against Jara. Baesman looked alright against him (Jara) but I don't feel like he went for the finish, it looked like he was just trying to get a win."
Although the champion is undefeated in his professional campaign, his opponent Baesman isn't deterred and believes that his experience will push him to prevail. Griffin believes that Baesman may look to come at him in different ways that Griffin must be prepared to face, including taking him to the mat in order to circumvent the champions striking. Baesman said that there isn't one game plan in his arsenal to beat the champ, he has many.
"If it's going my way while I'm in his world I'm going to keep it there and stay on top the whole time," Baesman said to SR. "I don't just have one or two game plans to beat him, I got millions."
June 9 will be the date that these two will finally get the chance to settle the dispute over who's game plan will be more effective. Griffin has a message for Baesman and anyone else in the welterweight division of the WCFC that might want to challenge him in the future.
"I hit a lot harder than you think I do so good luck man," Griffin said to SR. "Let God be on your side and come get it, but watch your chin."
