After a tumultuous year, former Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion, Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal, started 2012 with a knock out victory against Lorenz Larkin in his last fight at Strike force: Rockhold vs. Jardine back in January. Unfortunately for Lawal the year turned its tide as the win was changed to a no contest and his license suspended for nine months after failing his drug test. Mo tested positive for a banned, over the counter product that contained the steroid Drostanolone. On top of that, he also endured a staph infection and several knee surgeries following the Larkin fight. The real  damage struck when Dana White removed him from his Strikeforce contract after the fighter called a Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) representative, Pat Lundvall a “racist bitch” on his twitter account in response to her asking if he understood English. Since then, White has revealed the possibility of Lawal returning to Strikeforce after the fighter phoned Lundvall and apologized. However, Mo has put the past behind him and is moving on. TNA President of Entertainment Dixie Carter has faith in King Mo.
“Mo is the perfect athlete for this type of alliance," Carter stated. "He is the real deal in MMA, and his bold personality and world class wrestling accomplishments are unparalleled. I’m confident he will have a major impact in both sports”.
Bellator Chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney believes that King Mo will excel in both sports and rise above the criticisms he may undergo from some MMA fans.
"I have an amazing amount of trust in the MMA fan base,” Rebney said. “. . . and their ability to realize what mixed martial arts is and realize what professional wrestling is, and understand we found a guy in Mo who can transcend both of those different environments simultaneously.”
Spike TV’s "MMA Uncensored Live" achieved a record high of 567,000 viewers thanks to King Mo’s announcement Thursday. And the fighter seems to be thrilled about joining the Spike TV family.
“This deal is a dream come true for me,” Lawal said. “Bjorn and Dixie have given me the opportunity to engage in my two great loves, mixed martial arts and professional wrestling, at the same time. I'm going to knock out people in the cage and hit people with chairs in the ring. Either way, I'm winning. And, to have it all on Spike TV is really butter cream icing on a big ol’ cake – not that whipped cream stuff either!”
