"I want to thank all my fans, friends, coaches, Legal Counsel, sponsors, who are with me. Unfortunately we could not reduce my penalty. I'm sad ... But after a storm in the morning see the sun shine. Nothing like a day after another day .. Soon will come back better than ever I promise. Thank my God, always keep praising you," Santos said on Facebook.
Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos appeared before the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) in order to reduce her suspension from twelve months to six. This reduction was not granted, and Santos' suspension will still conclude on December 16th, 2012. But in the mean time, she has apologized for her steroid usage while reminding us that she still exists and intends to compete in the future.
"I am not a cheater. I passed every drug test and never used steroids knowingly... I just made the mistake of taking something that was supposed to help me lost weight. I did not know it was a steroid," Santos said in a youtube video.
While it's not completely convincing that she doped unknowingly, she's certainly following the typical steps towards re-legitimization while avoiding the PR fumbles many athletes make. An apologetic video and an explanation is all an athlete can do at this point.
