Gamboa against Donaire is strong possibility

A rundown of boxing action

I was reading about a possible bout between Nonito Donaire and Yuriorkis Gamboa if Gamboa beats De Leon in their bout scheduled for 9/10/2011 in Atlantic City, and I was immediately intrigued.

Nonito has some of the fastest reflexes I've seen since Jones Jr. He has power in both hands, and is very intelligent in the ring. Problem is: He loves his crowd.

I know how that sounds, But the fighters who love their crowd too much (IE. Arturo Gatti) have NO SECOND THOUGHTS ABOUT STANDING AND BANGING.

And that's when everything can and sometimes will go straight out the window. I have never witnessed Nonito hurt before so I don't know how he will react.

My guess is that he will stand toe to toe to redeem his crowds favor, even when he shouldn't.

Gamboa will be in a Slugger against Ponce De Leon on Sept. 10 so if you want your own current opinion of him you will get an opportunity to formulate one if you get a chance to watch the bout, but all signs point to Gamboa being a Superstar in the near future and that sounds about right.

Ben Henderson and Carlos Condit Sign Extensions with the UFC

UFC Welterweight Carlos Condit
According to the CEO of First Round Management, Ben Henderson and Carlos Condit have recently signed contract extensions with the UFC.

Fans will now have the ability to see both of these fighters continue to grow inside the octagon for the forseable furture.

These two amazing fighters have clearly earned their place in the UFC.

Carlos Condit has only one loss, to Martin Kampman, since 2006. Even that loss was a split decision.

This impressive streak has been topped off by his two most recent fights, knocking out Dan Hardy and Dong Hyun Kim.

A long road for Homosexual MMA fighters

Would you wrestle a gay fighter?

We have deaf fighters, we have female fighters, we have fighters from all over the world, but as it stands, homosexuals are not well represented in the ranks of MMA.

So why is this? I think of this as a demographics issue: homosexuals may tend to be less interested in combat sports.

It could also be a social issue: in high school, where many athletes get their grounding, homophobia is rampant, especially among the athletic crowd.

Within 4 hours of Quinton "Rampage" Jackson sustaining a "hand injury" during training, Joe Silva (UFC matchmaker) called Rampage's manager to inquire about the status of the upcoming fight, given the injury. A few things to consider:
  1. Rampage mentioned his injury only to his camp, and did not make a public statement.
  2. Joe Silva got information about the injury from Jon "Bones" Jones' manager, Malki Kawa.
  3. Rampage's hand was never injured.

Middleweight Dominance

Anderson Silva (left) squares off against his soon to be beaten oppoenent Yushin Okaim (right)

This past Saturday night, Anderson Silva defeated Yushin Okami and officially cleared out the middleweight division. I am pretty much speechless because of it.

In my mind I knew that this was going to be the outcome but in my heart I wanted to see Okami win just so there could be some suspense in the middleweight division again.

In my assessment for someone to defeat Anderson they would have to get on top of him quickly and push an unrelenting but methodical pace.

The longer a fight goes for Silva the stronger he gets. The man is too intelligent a fighter, so the more time one spends in the cage with him the more time he will have to pick apart and find weaknesses to exploit. I cannot stress enough the importance of head movement when fighting Silva!

The man is clearly intimidating so fundamental things like that may slip when you are staring at him across the cage but Silva is too quick to leave your head stationary and hope to roll with what he throws. Keep your head moving!

Heavyweight Fighter "Big Nog" Noguiera celebrating his UFC 134 victory

Antonio Minotauro Nogueira, in the 40th fight of his career, found his fountain of youth at UFC 134 by defeating Brendan Schaub by KO at 3:09 of round 1.

In front of a Brazilian crowd that was jammed packed into the HSBC Arena in Rio De Janeiro, only 1 mile from Nogueira's gym and just 3 miles from his home, Big Nog shows the world that youth is still in learning and that the Brazilian MMA legends wisdom still reigns supreme.

Nogueira had never, not one time, fought inside his home country of Brazil and coming into the UFC 134 match up against Brendan Schaub many thought it would be a bittersweet event for Nogueira.

Fight fans and analysts alike were giving Brendan Schaub a much more than favorable chance to defeat Nogueira in dominate fashion.

The Middleweight Division has been utterly Annihilated. Who Next?

Anderson Silva celebrating his 15th straight victory

After last nights unbelievable showing for Brazilian fighters at UFC 134, I am left wondering one thing more than anything else. That one thing is "What in the world the middleweight division can offer at Anderson "The Spider" Silva that would even present a worthy challenge?"

Beating Yushin Okami last night brought Silva his 9th straight title defense and his 12th straight win since first beating Rich Franklin to take the title if you include Silva's victories over Forrest Griffin and James Irwin, as well as his victory over Travis Lutter who did not make weight for the title opportunity.

If George St. Pierre can defeat Nick Diaz at UFC 137, I am completely positive that there will be nothing but GSP vs Anderson Silva talk for months upon months and I will be taking full part in that banter.

For the sake of this discussion we are just going to assume that fights outside of the division are not happening at the moment for Silva.

I was looking over the UFC middleweight roster and there are a very select few fighters I can see with future contention for the title associated with their name. Those few names are . . .
